The E46 is the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series. It replaced the E36 and was introduced first as a four-door sedan, then expanded into Touring, coupe, cabriolet and Compact body styles. Across the range it combined longitudinal engines, rear-wheel drive and a multi-link rear axle with a broader safety and equipment package than the outgoing generation.

This page treats a body style as a separate catalog record while keeping generation-wide engineering, history and ownership knowledge in one place. Model names, power outputs and standard equipment varied by market and model year, so the tables identify representative European specifications and call out notable regional differences where they matter.

The five bodies followed different production and revision calendars. Sedan and Touring received their principal update before the regular coupe and cabriolet, Compact had its own short lifecycle, and M3 retained a separate shell, S54 powertrain and chassis specification. All-wheel-drive xi and xd derivatives were limited to sedan and Touring, while CSL, CS and North American ZHP cars require their own market and mechanical scope.

Transmissions & driven wheels

The gearbox cannot be identified reliably by “manual” or “automatic” alone; engine, market and production date determine the unit.

5-speed manual

The standard gearbox for most four- and six-cylinder models during the first part of the lifecycle. Exact Getrag or ZF unit and final-drive ratio depend on engine and market.

6-speed manual

Used by M3 from launch and introduced to selected high-output petrol and diesel models later in production, including 330 and 325ti/320td applications in some markets.

5-speed automatic

Steptronic torque-converter automatics were offered across much of the range. Unit family and calibration differ between engine, production date and market.

SMG / SSG

An automated single-clutch gearbox was offered on selected regular models; M3 used the faster, M-specific six-speed SMG II system as an alternative to the manual.

Rear-wheel drive

The default E46 layout: longitudinal engine, gearbox behind it and a separate rear differential. Final-drive ratios vary substantially by engine and transmission.

xi / xd all-wheel drive

Sedan and Touring could be ordered with a permanent all-wheel-drive system. The front driveline changes suspension, oil-pan and service parts, so it must be treated as its own mechanical branch.

06 / Model history

Production timeline & facelifts

E46 did not change on one universal facelift date. Sedan/Touring, regular two-doors, Compact and M3 follow different revision paths.

  1. Production begins

    Series production of the E46/4 sedan starts late in the year ahead of the 1998 market launch.

  2. Sedan launch

    The fourth-generation 3 Series launches with four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and the direct-injection 320d.

  3. The family expands

    Coupe and Touring join the range; the six-cylinder 330d introduces common-rail diesel performance to the generation.

  4. Cabriolet, M54 and M3

    The open body arrives, 325/330 M54 models replace 323/328 derivatives, and the E46 M3 coupe enters production.

  5. Compact and Valvetronic

    The E46/5 Compact completes the five-body family. 316ti debuts production Valvetronic; M3 Cabriolet and SMG II follow. Sedan/Touring receive their main update.

  6. Coupe/Cabriolet facelift

    Two-door regular models gain revised lights and body details; updated diesels and wider six-speed-manual availability appear. M3 CSL is produced.

  7. Late-series development

    320Cd Cabriolet becomes BMW’s first open-top diesel. Compact receives detail updates; market-specific editions continue.

  8. Successor transition

    E90 replaces the sedan first. Touring, Compact, coupe, cabriolet and M3 end on different schedules, with final E46 derivatives continuing into 2006.

A release-quality catalog should help identify risk without presenting forum anecdotes as universal defects. Use this as a structured inspection list.

Priority inspection

  • Confirm open safety recalls and airbag campaigns by VIN with BMW or the national authority.
  • Inspect the rear-axle carrier mounting area and surrounding floor for cracks, previous reinforcement or repair.
  • Pressure-test the cooling system and inspect expansion tank, radiator necks, thermostat housing, water pump and hoses.
  • Check corrosion at jacking points, rear arches, sill ends, boot-lid edges, fuel-filler area and Touring tailgate seams.

Engine & driveline

  • Check cold-start behaviour, crankcase ventilation, oil-filter-housing and valve-cover leaks on petrol engines.
  • On M54, inspect DISA operation and intake boots; on M52TU/M54 assess VANOS seals and vacuum leaks.
  • On diesels, verify turbo control, injector correction, crankcase breather service and swirl-flap strategy where fitted.
  • Check clutch, dual-mass flywheel, gearbox shifts, differential noise, propshaft coupling and centre support bearing.

Chassis, body & electronics

  • Inspect front control-arm ball joints/bushes, rear trailing-arm bushes, dampers, springs and top mounts.
  • Test every window regulator, central lock, mirror, climate-control function, instrument display and audio/navigation unit.
  • Check Cabriolet roof operation and drains; check Touring tailgate wiring, rear wiper and glass release.
  • Confirm ABS/DSC warning lamps complete their self-test and scan all modules, not only the engine ECU.

How to identify the exact car

The badge, body shape and registration year are not enough for accurate parts, equipment or technical data.

VIN
The 17-character VIN identifies manufacturer, model/engine family, restraint system, market and serial number. Decode it, then confirm against the physical build plate and stamped identifiers.
Build date
Model year is not enough for parts. E46 revisions often split by month, especially lights, control modules, suspension, airbags, navigation and engine-management components.
Body code
E46/4 sedan, E46/3 Touring, E46/2 coupe, E46/2C cabriolet and E46/5 Compact. M3 uses the coupe/cabriolet body family but has its own parts and chassis branches.
Engine code
Badge alone cannot determine the engine: 316, 318, 320, 325 and 330 names span multiple engines. Confirm the engine designation, emissions version and production date.
Option codes
Factory equipment is recorded as SA option codes. Use a build sheet before describing a car as Sport, M Sport, Individual, Harman Kardon, xenon or navigation equipped.
Parts compatibility
Separate left/right-hand drive, petrol/diesel, RWD/AWD, pre/post-facelift and M/non-M. Visual similarity is not proof that a part interchanges.
