How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected roadster fits into the family.
E52 Z8 translated the 1997 Z07 concept's BMW 507 homage into a limited-production aluminium roadster. The aluminium spaceframe and outer panels, 4.9-litre S62 V8, six-speed manual and bespoke body made it a standalone model rather than a Z3 or 5 Series derivative.
BMW Group Archive dates series production from 1999 to 2003 and records approximately 5,700 BMW Z8s. The standard BMW car used the M5-derived V8 and manual gearbox; the later US-market ALPINA Roadster V8 substituted a different engine/transmission/chassis character and must remain a separate manufacturer derivative.
The detachable hardtop was supplied as equipment for the roadster and does not create a coupé body route. Prototype, concept and film-car histories are editorial context, not additional series-production modifications.
