iX1 U11: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity vehicle fits into the family.

The iX1 is the battery-electric branch of U11 X1 and is assembled at Regensburg on the same flexible line as combustion and plug-in-hybrid derivatives. The shared body does not make battery packaging, mass, luggage, axle loads or service requirements interchangeable.

The dual-motor xDrive30 launched first, followed by the front-drive eDrive20 in selected markets. Motor output, usable energy, AC/DC charging and certified range depend on derivative and region; North American and Chinese availability follows different schedules and body scopes.

U11's electric architecture uses fifth-generation BMW eDrive and a floor-mounted battery. Long-wheelbase Asian iX1 derivatives require their own body code and dimensions rather than being treated as a wheel option on the standard European shell.
