M6 E63/E64: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected coupe fits into the family.

E63/E64 revived M6 after a long gap and paired coupé and soft-top convertible bodies with the S85 V10. The seven-speed SMG III was the global core transmission; a six-speed manual was offered in North America, creating a separate regional performance and control specification.

The carbon-fibre roof applies to the coupé, not the convertible, whose reinforcement, roof storage and mass are different. Both bodies used model-specific suspension, brakes, differential and programmable power modes, but dimensions and acceleration cannot be copied between them.

Competition packages and regional editions should inherit the correct V10 drivetrain unless factory evidence shows a mechanical change. Race and prototype projects, including later CSL experiments, are historical records rather than customer derivatives.
