BMW developed the 600 from the Isetta concept but sold it as a distinct four-seat model. It retained the front-entry door, while a conventional right-side rear door, a 1,700 mm wheelbase and a new perimeter frame made the second seating row usable.
A rear-mounted 582 cc motorcycle-derived flat-twin produced 19.5 bhp and drove through a four-speed all-synchromesh transmission. The 600 introduced BMW's semi-trailing-arm independent rear suspension, an architecture that would become important to later BMW passenger cars.
Production ran from September 1957 to November 1959. BMW Group Classic records 34,813 cars; limited luggage room, four-seat packaging and the transition to the unitary-body BMW 700 explain why the 600 must be treated as a bridge model rather than an Isetta trim.
