7 Series E32: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

E32 made the 7 Series look and feel like a modern luxury flagship. Its low nose, clean glasshouse and broad rear created a shape that influenced BMW saloons for years, while the cabin combined traditional materials with a rapidly expanding range of electrical comfort features.

The 750i brought a production V12 back to German luxury cars, long-wheelbase versions made rear-seat space a formal branch of the range, and V8 engines joined later in the lifecycle. The familiar body therefore hides major differences in length, engine, braking and equipment.

Standard and iL E32 are different factory bodies, not equipment packages: the long car adds 114 mm to the wheelbase and rear compartment. The V12 arrived before the later V8 family, and xenon lighting plus the 1992 revision create further identification boundaries. High-security and coachbuilt derivatives should retain their special-production status rather than becoming ordinary body choices.

  1. E32, V12 and iL

    Standard cars launched first; 750i/750iL and the extended body followed.

  2. Xenon, V8 and update

  3. V8 range and revision
