B4 / D4 F32/F33: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected coupe fits into the family.

F32/F33 inaugurated B4/D4 naming for ALPINA versions of BMW's newly separated 4 Series. B4 Bi-Turbo and B4 S used petrol six-cylinder power, while D4 Bi-Turbo offered a diesel coupé/cabriolet programme depending on market.

Coupé and retractable-hardtop Cabriolet have different mass, luggage and performance. B4 S, Edition 99 and market-specific all-wheel-drive cars need independent dates and hardware, while edition colours should inherit the correct mechanical base.

These cars share technology with F30/F31 B3/D3 but not catalog identity. Racing B6 GT3 and the later G26 Gran Coupé are separate branches.
