5 Series E34: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected touring fits into the family.

E34 gave the 5 Series the solidity and clean proportions that came to define BMW in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was larger and more aerodynamic than the E28, with a broader safety and equipment programme, yet it retained the clear driver-oriented layout of its predecessor.

The generation kept expanding long after launch. Touring created the first factory estate branch, 525iX added all-wheel drive, V8 engines returned to BMW's executive class, and the M5 was eventually offered as both saloon and rare Touring. Few earlier 5 Series generations covered such a wide mechanical range.

E34 is not only a sedan generation: the 1991 Touring has its own rear body, tailgate, luggage system and production boundary. The range also spans four- and six-cylinder engines, the first 5 Series V8s, diesel, 525iX all-wheel drive and a low-volume M5 Touring, so drivetrain and load-body data must follow the exact body and production date.
