How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.
E28 M5 established the discreet high-performance business sedan formula. Hand assembly combined the regular E28 shell with M-developed suspension, brakes and a six-cylinder derived from the M1 programme, but engine identity and rated output differed between European and emissions-controlled North American cars.
European production used the M88/3, while North America received the S38B35 with catalyst and regional equipment. Gearbox, final drive, standard trim, side of steering and production location must be attached to market rather than inferred from the M5 badge alone.
Published totals vary because South African assembly, pre-series cars and market batches are counted differently. The earlier E12 M535i is an important predecessor but not an E28 M5 generation and needs its own catalog node when the early M-car tree is expanded.
