i7 G70: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.

The i7 is the battery-electric drivetrain branch of G70 7 Series and shares the single worldwide long-wheelbase sedan body and Dingolfing assembly line with combustion and plug-in-hybrid variants. Its underfloor battery, cooling, mass, luggage and charging specification remain i7-specific.

The initial xDrive60 launched in 2022, followed by rear-drive eDrive50 and the high-output M70 xDrive on market-specific schedules. Output, battery energy, range and equipment differ by market and model year, and M70 is an M Performance flagship rather than a separate M7 model.

BMW's July 2026 update introduced sixth-generation round-cell battery technology, faster charging, new electronics and Panoramic iDrive. Pre-update Gen5 and post-update Gen6 i7 cars require separate battery and charging rows even where the commercial badge is similar.
