3 Series → E36 → Compact
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected compact fits into the family.
With the E36, the 3 Series left the upright 1980s behind. A longer wheelbase, smoother bodywork and a much more modern cabin made it feel like a larger and more mature car, while the new multi-link rear suspension gave BMW a more sophisticated base for both comfort and handling.
BMW also separated the bodies more clearly than before. The Coupe received its own roof, doors and exterior proportions; Touring, Cabriolet and Compact then filled very different roles. That variety made the E36 more international, but it also means parts, dimensions and production dates cannot safely be transferred from one body to another.
Each E36 body has its own production boundary and exterior structure: the Coupe is not simply a sedan with two doors, Touring joined later, Cabriolet required a reinforced shell, and Compact used a shortened rear body with inherited E30-derived rear-suspension architecture. European and North American M3 specifications differ substantially in engine and output, and no regular factory E36 xDrive branch existed.

Early 320i/325i M50 engines transitioned to M52 units in 320i, 323i and 328i. VANOS, displacement and electronics follow production date and market.
The four-cylinder M41 powered 318tds while the six-cylinder M51 served 325td/325tds. Cooling and fuel systems need their own diagnostic workflow.
