How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected gran coupe fits into the family.
F91/F92/F93 brought the M8 name to series production after the E31 prototype had remained experimental. Convertible, Coupé and Gran Coupé use the S63 twin-turbo V8, eight-speed M Steptronic and configurable M xDrive, but their roof, wheelbase, seating, luggage and mass require distinct body specifications.
Launch ranges included regular and Competition models in some markets; later programmes concentrated on Competition. Rated output and standard equipment therefore depend on market and date, while the M8 Competition's 2WD mode remains part of its M xDrive system.
The M8 Gran Coupé is not an M6 or M5 derivative despite shared components. M8 GTE was a purpose-built racing programme that preceded the road launch and must not supply road-car dimensions or engine output.
