F90 introduced M xDrive to M5, pairing the S63 twin-turbo V8 with an eight-speed M Steptronic and a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that can provide a driver-selected 2WD mode. It therefore represents a clean drivetrain break from rear-drive DCT-equipped F10.
Competition became a factory model with more power and revised chassis tuning, followed by the lighter, still more powerful M5 CS. The 2020 lifecycle update changed design and digital equipment; launch, Competition, LCI and CS records must remain date-scoped.
Regional output ratings, particulate-filter timing and standard equipment differ. The 2WD setting does not make F90 a conventional rear-drive model: its homologated hardware remains M xDrive, a distinction the drivetrain field must preserve.
