M3 E46: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected cabriolet fits into the family.

E46 M3 returned the production range to coupé and convertible bodies and centred it on the 3.2-litre S54 inline-six. The engine's high-rev character, variable M differential and substantially reworked chassis separated it from an ordinary E46 despite the shared model family.

Customers could choose a six-speed manual or the SMG II automated manual; SMG is not a torque-converter automatic. The lightweight CSL added a revised intake, carbon roof and body panels, unique chassis calibration and greater output, while the later CS/Competition Package sat between standard and CSL depending on market.

North American output ratings and Competition Package naming differ from European CS usage. The CSL was not officially sold in every market, and the V8-powered M3 GTR road and race cars require their own low-volume records rather than being folded into the S54 range.
