X M / XM F97/F98: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity coupe fits into the family.

F97 X3 M and F98 X4 M were the first full M models in BMW's mid-size X range. Both introduced the S58 twin-turbo inline-six to production and paired it with eight-speed M Steptronic, M xDrive and an Active M Differential; the X3 SAV and X4 SAC remain separate bodies with different roofline, cargo space and dimensions.

Launch cars were offered as standard and Competition models with different output. The 2021 update concentrated many markets on Competition, increased torque and revised design, controls and chassis calibration; launch and LCI figures therefore require production-date boundaries.

The two body programmes did not end together: X3 M followed the G01 lifecycle while X4 M continued with G02 into 2025. X3 M40i/X4 M40i are M Performance models rather than full M cars and must not appear as F97/F98 modifications.
