8 Series → G14/G15/G16 → Gran Coupe
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected gran coupe fits into the family.
The modern 8 Series returned with three regular bodies: G15 coupe in 2018, G14 soft-top convertible soon after, and the longer G16 four-door Gran Coupe in 2019. Coupe and convertible share a 2,822 mm wheelbase, while G16 extends it to 3,023 mm and therefore needs separate rear-cabin, dimension and production data.
The regular range centred on 840i, 840d xDrive and M850i xDrive derivatives with pronounced regional variation. F91/F92/F93 M8 models and the Alpina B8 are related but separately scoped high-performance products; their S63 engines, chassis specification and production boundaries must not be merged into the standard G14/G15/G16 matrix.
BMW updated all three bodies for 2022 with exterior, display and equipment changes. English Wikipedia records regular 8 Series production ending at the end of April 2026; BMW's April 2026 Dingolfing plant profile no longer lists 8 Series among daily current output, but no dedicated factory last-car release was found, so the exact end date remains an explicitly secondary boundary.
Dimensions can change with body, market and model year, so this page keeps them tied to the exact factory branch.
| Body | Code | Production | Doors / seats | Length | Luggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cabriolet | G14 | 2018–2026 | 2-door convertible / 4 | 4,843 mm | 280–350 L |
| Coupe | G15 | 2018–2026 | 2-door coupe / 4 | 4,851 mm | 420 L |
| Gran Coupe | G16 | 2018–2026 | 4-door fastback / 5 | 5,082 mm | 440 L |
The generation could span very different engines and drivetrains. The table keeps output, gearbox, market and production period together.
Documented gran coupe applications; output and availability remain market- and model-year-specific.
| Model | Years | Engine | Output | Transmission | Drive | Market | Source |

Inline and V engines are grouped by engine family, displacement, induction system and emissions specification.
Where diesels were offered, output, injection generation and emissions hardware are recorded market by market.
Mild- and plug-in hybrids are separate derivatives; combustion-engine output must not be substituted for total system output.
Gearboxes, driven wheels and final-drive hardware changed with engine, market and production date.
Gearbox type and unit code follow engine, market and production date. Gear count alone does not identify the transmission.
Catalog architecture: longitudinal layout · rear- or all-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive availability and hardware remain derivative-specific.
Ratio, differential type and electronic control belong to the exact derivative and can differ on performance models.
Suspension, brakes, safety systems and electronics evolved across the range, even when cars shared the same basic architecture.
The important launches, additions and updates did not always happen at the same time for every body or market.
BMW reintroduced the 8 Series name with its new flagship fixed-roof grand tourer.
The second body added a powered fabric roof and its own reinforcement and luggage package.
The four-door body entered the range with a 201 mm longer wheelbase than coupe and convertible.
BMW revised the coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe together for the middle of the lifecycle.
Secondary reporting dates the end of regular production to late April; the exact factory last-car date still lacks a dedicated BMW release.
Performance models, option packages and regional editions may look related, but their engineering and production identity can be very different.
8 Series G14 is a distinct G14/G15/G16 body branch. An open body with a folding roof and generation-specific structural reinforcement, seating and luggage packaging. Engines/drive: B58 petrol I6, N63 petrol V8, B57 diesel I6.
8 Series G15 is a distinct G14/G15/G16 body branch. A lower-roof two-door body with longer doors and a more overtly sporting brief than the corresponding sedan. Engines/drive: B58 petrol I6, N63 petrol V8, B57 diesel I6.
8 Series G16 is a distinct G14/G15/G16 body branch. A four-door fastback combining a coupe-like roofline with easier rear access and a large tailgate or sedan-style luggage opening. Engines/drive: B58 petrol I6, N63 petrol V8, B57 diesel I6.
Cabin technology and standard equipment changed by country and year; a build sheet remains the best guide to one individual car.
A practical starting point for inspecting and maintaining a car from this generation — not a diagnosis of an individual example.
| Item | Interval / trigger | Catalog note |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil & filter | CBS/factory schedule; time and mileage for historic cars | Oil approval follows the exact engine and market. |
| Brake fluid | Time-based factory schedule | ABS/DSC-compatible bleeding procedure is required after hydraulic work. |
| Coolant | Factory schedule and condition | Fluid specification and bleeding method are generation-specific. |
| Transmission & final drives | Unit type and operating conditions | Use the exact approved fluid; no one interval fits every derivative. |
The badge and registration year tell only part of the story; production date, body code, engine and factory options complete it.
The story is mapped through English Wikipedia and its bibliography, then important dates and technical claims are checked against BMW material.
