X6 F16: history, design and engineering

How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sports activity coupe fits into the family.

F16 was the second X6 and launched in 2014 with a lighter body, improved aerodynamics and a five-seat cabin as the normal configuration. It shared architecture and production context with F15 X5 but retained a distinct fastback body, dimensions and luggage package.

Regional ranges included six- and eight-cylinder petrol engines and six-cylinder diesels, all paired with xDrive and an eight-speed automatic in regular factory specifications. The F86 X6 M is a separate BMW M branch, not the same record as M Sport or M Performance equipment.

Like F15, F16 completed its lifecycle without a conventional full exterior facelift. Engines, infotainment and options still changed by production date, and those running revisions need explicit model-year rows.
