5 Series → E28 → Sedan
How this generation came about, what made it different and how the selected sedan fits into the family.
E28 looked evolutionary, but it made the 5 Series much more technically ambitious. Better aerodynamics, expanded onboard electronics and a wider choice of engines turned the familiar four-door shape into a bridge between the mechanical 1970s and BMW's increasingly sophisticated 1980s cars.
Its range explored several ideas at once: the 524td introduced BMW's first production diesel, the 525e pursued low-rev efficiency, and the M535i and M5 offered two distinct interpretations of a fast executive saloon. Market differences are especially important because outputs and equipment varied widely.
E28 retained the single sedan body but broadened the identity of the 5 Series: 524td became BMW's first production diesel, 525e pursued low-speed efficiency, and M535i and M5 created two different performance levels. European, South African and North American M5/M535i specifications must be kept market-specific, as must catalyst, gearbox and bumper differences across the regular range.

524d/524td, M535i and the first M5 established new branches of the range.
The 524td introduced a turbocharged six-cylinder diesel to BMW series production.
Series production ended in December before E34 became the core 5 Series.
Performance models, option packages and regional editions may look related, but their engineering and production identity can be very different.
